July 5- Took the weekend off

....and so I don't feel bad about an absentee 4th of July weekend. 4th of July, by the way, is DEFINITELY on par with Thanksgiving in my book, particularly when it coincides with a Saturday and the weather cooperates. Yesterday, I grilled and had a relaxing lunch with my family, at which time I announced that it was an utterly perfect day. And it was. Mid-70s, cloudless, slight breeze....naturally, that meant baseball in the park. So I took a few hacks at the ballfield with a few gentleman friends. Felt good to get a few swings in. Also improved my sweet farmer's tan, which came in earlier than camp time this summer...which has its pros and cons (pros: misleading others into thinking I tan, thus helping my vanity. Cons: the very same. Also, tan comes after the burn subsides).

After a glorious day on the field (WHICH was slightly overshadowed by my knee, which- thanks to some vigorous outfield fly ball-shagging- has never felt worse), I went out to Nick's to do some more grilling. Now Nick, who is a chef, is a man who rightfully takes great pride in his grilling. I got some good lessons on the art of grilling through the late afternoon and again into the night.

In between, Nick, Dan, and I went down to the river for a spectacular fireworks display. The Hudson River was stumbled upon Hammerin' Hank Huddy 400 years ago, and so there were fireworks down by the river. So we settled down and watched a dazzling display, and all we kept talking about was the scene in the Sandlot where they play the only night game of the year...I just spent 15 minutes looking for a clip and this was the best I could find. Needless to say, the Ray Charles rendition of "America the Beautiful" makes the scene a classic.

All in all, it was truly a perfect day. Now, I am up later than I would have hoped, since camp starts tomorrow.... however, I should probably expand on my goals for July, as they have been cemented now.

My give up for July is to not use my phone while driving. I am guilty of this and I am well aware that it has a more immediate negative effect (potentially) than any dietary downsides (see previous paragraphs; note consumption of 5 burgers and pork sandwiches). Anyway, no calling/taking calls/texting/reading texts while in the car. I hope that this will make me see that this is a really unnecessary part of my life and that I can kick it by August 1st, something I hadn't really wanted to do with any of my give-ups, except the June ones, of course...I never really had a desire to not drink ever again.

As for something I do every day? Cooking's out of the question, and here's the story behind that:

So Wednesday, I come back from a day's work and went right to sleep. Hard. Long snooze. Missed dinner entirely. It was over before it began. My goal is to help people every day of the month. I will probably not share my helping on here, since I still kinda believe in the idea that a good turn you share doesnt' count. Suffice it to say I will let you know if, in fact, I am unable to help anyone on a given day this month.

So that's my goal; exemplifies two instances of bettering myself. Let's make it happen! Oh, and let's do camp!
